Totality by Big Kid Science is a free educational app that aims to bring the awe-inspiring experience of a total solar eclipse to everyone. Developed by Germinate LLC and now owned by the nonprofit American Astronomical Society, this app provides a comprehensive guide to eclipses and helps users find upcoming eclipse events worldwide, including the 2023 annular and 2024 total eclipses across North America.
One of the standout features of Totality is its interactive map, which allows users to see exactly what they can expect to witness at any location during upcoming annular and total solar eclipses. Powered by eclipse code from Xavier Jubier, the map provides a detailed review of past eclipses as well. With the app's GPS functionality, users can also discover what they will see at their current location and find the nearest spots to witness annularity or totality.
In addition to the map, Totality offers navigation tools to help users plan their best route to the path of totality. The Learn screen provides various options to safely view a solar eclipse, understand the science behind eclipses, and even includes classroom activities. The Shop screen offers a selection of space and science books, eclipse glasses for safe viewing, and links to space education nonprofits.
